What is SSB Interview (Services Selection Board Interview)?

The Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview is a comprehensive 5-day evaluation process. It is not merely an examination but a holistic assessment of a candidate’s personality, mental acumen, physical fitness, and leadership potential.

The SSB (Services Selection Board) Interview Procedure consists of two phases: Stage I and Stage II. It is important to note that only those candidates who successfully clear Stage I will be eligible to proceed to Stage II.

5 Days SSB Interview Process Details

The five-day process of the SSB Interview can be broadly categorized into the following:

  • Day 1 : Screening Tests (OIR and PPDT)

  • Day 3 & 4 : Group Testing Officer (GTO) Series
  • Day 5 : Conference

SSB Interview Day 1 – Reporting & Screening Test

This is your entry point into the rigorous selection process. The day typically consists of the following:

  1. Reporting
    You’ll arrive at the designated SSB center, complete the necessary documentation, and receive instructions for the days ahead.
  2. Officer Intelligence Test (OIR Test)
    A set of verbal (50 questions) and non-verbal (50 questions) tests. These tests are usually timed (30 minutes for each questions set), and your speed and accuracy are both important.
  3. Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT)
    You’ll be shown a hazy image for 30 seconds and to write a 70 words story based on what you observed.
  4. Story Narration and Discussion Test
    Each group member is given 1 minute to share their personal story and group is then asked to create a story including elements from each of their individual picture stories.
  5. Elimination
    The first day concludes with the results of the screening. Those who clear the screening proceed to the next days, while others are sent home.

SSB Interview Day 2 – Psychology Test

This day focuses on a series of psychological assessments designed to reveal your personality traits, stigmas and unconscious strengths.

  1. Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
    Given 12 blurry pictures, 11 of which are blurry and one of which is a blank board. You will get a picture for 30 seconds and then you will get 4 minutes to write a story.
  2. Word Association Test (WAT)
    You will get sixty simple words for 15 seconds each, and you have to answer the first thought that comes to your mind after the stimulus is shown.
  3. Situation Reaction Exam (SRT)
    You’ll get a booklet with 60 questions based on real-world scenarios. You will must record your responses to these events within 30 minutes.
  4. Self Description Test (SDT)
    Get 5 questions about perceptions of yourselves or your closest life associates. The SDT assesses your self-image, self-esteem, and perspective of the world and other people.

SSB Interview Day 3 – Group Task 1

This day involves various group activities designed to assess your teamwork, leadership, problem-solving skills and individual contributions.

  1. Group Discussion (GD)
    SSB conduct 2 group discussion with 20 to 30 minutes. You will have to express your views on a Social Issue and Current Events topics.
  2. Group Planning Exercises (GPE)
    The candidates will divided into 10 to 15 people groups. A problem will be presented to the group, and you will collaboratively develop a strategic solution.
  3. Progressive Group Task (PGT)
    SSB provides four obstacles and helpful materials to the candidates. You should utilize the materials provided skillfully and solve the hurdles as an integrated group.
  4. Group Obstacle Race (GOR)
    There will be 6 obstacles for a group of competitors on the race course. Here, the groups will perform cooperatively. SSB uses this task to assess the sportsmanship, competitiveness, and teamwork of the candidate.
  5. Half Group Task (HGT)
    This is similar to the Progressive Group Task (PGT). The only difference is that the group is further subdivided. For example, if there are 20 people in a group, now 10 people in one group and 10 people in the other group will compete against each other.

SSB Interview Day 4 – Group Task 2

Day 4 continues with group tasks and individual assessments.

  1. Lecturette
    Unprepared speech competition. Candidates have to choose a panel with 4 topics. Candidates can choose a topic of their choice from the given topics. Candidates have 3 minutes to speak on the chosen topic.
  2. Individual Obstacles (IO)
    Candidates must get over 10 obstacle within 3 minutes. The obstacle are numbered from 1 to 10 according to their degree of difficulty. With 1 being the easy and 10 being the most difficult.
  3. Command Task
    You will given leadership position. While playing the role of commander, you should choose sub-ordinates who will help you get over hurdles.
  4. Final Group Task (FGT)
    Candidates are organized into a larger unit. Candidates must solve certain issues and hurdles within a limited time. The task is same as Progressive Group Task (PGT), but more difficult.
  5. Personal Interview
    You will have a one-on-one interview with an interviewing officer, where your character and personality will be analyzed.

SSB Interview Day 5 – Conference

On the last day, all the officers will come together and discuss each candidate’s performance. Then candidates go to Conference Room and officers asks questions. Later analyzing all candidates performance, SSB announce Results.
